1911 Guide Rod Question

Years ago, I had a gunsmith do his reliability modifications, having told him I want this gun to work every time I pull the trigger. It has all these years and perhaps I should stick to what works. I am wondering though about a spring guide rod. Do these things improve the functioning of the gun including reliability? If so can they be drop-in installed by myself? And is their any consensus about which brand is the way to go? I find now that during shooting practice, the hammer is biting the area between
